The incidence of sleep-related disorders is increasing at an alarming rate. Insomnia is one of the most common problems for which people seek medical attention. The impact of sleep problems can affect every area of a person's life. Increased irritability, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, loss of interest in activities, problems in marriage and work are just a few of the areas that are effected by sleep deprivation. In addition, there are a variety of medical problems that are also affected. During the sleep process the body is restored and without adequate sleep our overall physical health can be jeopardized.

Insomnia can be related to both emotional and chemical issues. Increasing amounts of stress that are common in modern day America can result in problems with sleep. Our lives are too busy and hectic and lack the balance necessary for good health. The more stress a person experiences, the more it can effect the natural rhythms of the body that involve sleep.

As a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Dr. Martin and has spent years assisting people struggling with sleep problems. He works closely with a person's physician to rule out the possibility of medical issues that may be affecting sleep such as sleep apnea, thyroid problems, side-effects of medication, etc. A variety of techniques are used to help a person relax into a restful sleep. These include deep muscle relaxation training, cognitive retraining, and stress management techniques, and other approaches designed to enhance sleep.

Biofeedback techniques including neurotherapy can also be utilized. These approaches provide instruction on how to relax the body and the mind.
